Green Kid Crafts... Discovering Nature

Yesterday we enjoyed a picnic in the backyard on an incredibly beautiful day, went on a scavenger hunt, made a bird feeder out of pine cones and peanut butter, and made sun prints. I'd say we had a pretty productive afternoon basking in God's amazing creation!
In this month's Green Kid Crafts Discovery Subscription Box, Nature was the theme.  And it couldn't have been more timely!  Before we received our box in the mail, we had already decided the day was too beautiful to spend having school inside.  We enjoyed an early lunch picnic as I rolled ideas around in my mind for adapting our lessons to the outdoors.  I didn't have to roll ideas around for long, because the mailman rang the doorbell and left a package on our doorstep just as we were finishing up dessert.
It was our Discovery Box!  It came with all kinds of exciting things perfectly fit for our beautiful weather: a naturalist kit, pine cone bird feeder kit, sun prints, and a nature scavenger hunt.  We had so much fun with everything!

After we cleaned up our picnic, we coated the pine cone from the nature box with peanut butter and covered it in seeds.  We hung it from the pine tree in our backyard where we've lately been seeing Orioles and Robins.  The kids are excited to give them a snack!
The sun prints were so cool!  These were something we'd never done before but they were very simple.  The kids chose leaves, shells, and rocks they especially liked and set them on top of the paper in the sun.  We "fixed" them in water after 5 minutes and talked about UV rays, shadows, sunlight, and photography.
Throughout the day, the kids tromped through the yard, looking for items on their nature scavenger hunt list. They had a blast looking for interesting rocks and leaves, peering at them through the magnifying glass that came with their box, and saving them in the special bag that was also included.
I was very impressed with the box and couldn't wait to blog about it even though we just received it yesterday! Each monthly box comes with 3 unique project kits designed to boost creativity, build confidence and engage kids with nature, and all of it is fun and earth-friendly.  It's $19.50 a month with free shipping.  But my blog readers get 20% off by using the promo code "TravelingSisterhood"--$15.60 is an awesome deal!
Special thanks to the wonderful people at Green Kid Crafts for providing my kiddos with hours of fun rolled into a free kit in exchange for my opinion!
